My Thoughts:
If you follow me on Instagram, you might remember a while back I posted this reel talking about movies I was super excited for. Sinners was one of them – it is actually the only one of them I’ve seen so far, although all 4 have released. I’m not the best at doing things in a timely manner.
But I did see it, so now you have to hear about it. Sinners belongs firmly in the canon of my favorite vampire movies. I have always loved a good (or bad) vampire flick, but in this Post-Twilight/True Blood hellscape, I have been feeling super burnt out. It feels like vampires have…lost their teeth. They just aren’t scary anymore! But not so in Sinners. These guys are definitely back in scary-town.
So you’ve got scary vampires, Michael B. Jordan (who is always good in everything – fight me), and the Devil’s music (I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t like the blues, that’s super weird). Sinners falls into my short list of favorite vampire films, no question. It’ has a lot in common with the stuff I really love. There are some heavy Near Dark vibes – please don’t ask me to expand. I don’t actually know what it is, but I felt it’s pretty much this, Near Dark, Nosferatu (yes, the new one), The Hunger, and The Lost Boys. That’s pretty much all I need.
Anyway, I see a lot of mess going around the internet about whether or not Sinners is over-hyped. For my money, it totally isn’t. If you haven’t seen it, you absolutely should. And I think the question of whether or not something is “over-hyped” is so silly. Like, does anyone ask if every Marvel movie is over-hyped? No, of course they don’t. Even though it most definitely is. See it or don’t. Nobody really cares.
But know it was fun, scary, and unique – those are not things you often get separately in big budget movies, let alone together. There is one part that seems to be really divisive to audiences, and I honestly thought it was going to take me out of it once it started, but somehow it still totally didn’t. I was riveted.
Rating:
Basically every 1-star review I could find blathered on about how all the 5-star reviews are fake reviews. Is this the movie-world equivalent to America’s battle over so-called “fake news” (i.e. any news you don’t personally agree with for definitely not political reasons)?
