Little Monsters (2019) directed by Abe Forsythe

Synopsis:
A washed-up musician teams up with a teacher and a kids show personality to protect young children from a sudden outbreak of zombies.

My Thoughts:
Well, IMDB’s synopsis doesn’t tell you a whole hell of a lot, so let me do you one better:
Dave is a loser. His band, God’s Sledgehammer broke up years ago, but he can’t let it go. His relationship with his girlfriend implodes because he lacks emotional maturity, and he can’t let that go. He is sleeping on his sister’s couch, and doing nothing with his time outside of getting high, playing zombie-killer video games, and busking on street corners with his electric guitar. As punishment for taking his nephew out of the house in the middle of the night to try to surprise-ask his ex-girlfriend to marry him (spoiler alert: that doesn’t go very well), his sister makes Dave wake up early and take her son Felix to school. When he walks Felix to class, he encounters Miss Caroline, Felix’s exceedingly beautiful kindergarten teacher, played by Lupita Nyong’o. He decides that he should hit on her – something that we learn every single father has done before him, because seriously, we’ve all seen her. She’s gorgeous.

So, needless to say he returns to pick Felix up at the end of the day. While he’s there, it is found out that a chaperone will be bowing out of tomorrow’s field trip to a local farm. Dave is more than happy to take their place if it means that he can spend more time trying to woo Miss Caroline.

So the field trip goes horribly awry when zombies get loose from a nearby US Army base and overrun the farm. It is up to Miss Caroline and Dave to keep the kids alive long enough to escape, while dealing not only with the zombie infestation, but also the constant troubles caused by weird and unpleasant kid’s TV host Teddy McGiggle, played admirably by Josh Gad, who somehow managed to not die immediately.

I loved every moment of this movie. I have a weakness for zom-coms and killer kids, and this movie feeds both of those loves.

It is a Hulu original (!), so if you have Hulu you should definitely give it a watch. They always kinda kill it with their Huluween fare, and this one is no exception.

My Rating:

Rating: 5 out of 5.
