My Thoughts:

I thoroughly enjoyed Les Petites Morts. The stories were creepy, sexy, and quite often highly disturbing – just what I like. There were classic fairytales, some re-told mythology, and some folklore. And there wasn’t a story in the bunch that I didn’t think was fantastic. With that being said however, here were my favorites in the bunch:

  • A Riddle to the Death by Hailey Piper – a reimagining of the Sphinx
  • Vicious Fruit by S.T. Gibson – the story of a man who breaks a deal with the faeries
  • A Greed of Flesh by Kelsey Christine McConnell – a selkie’s story
  • Sensualis Dismemoria by K.P. Kulski – I’m not sure the origin of this one (or if it’s wholly original), but it’s a beautiful story of a woman who escapes her wealthy and terrible husband
  • While She Lost Herself by Ali Seay – a woman whose previously perfect life has spiraled far beyond her control, and nobody seems to care
  • As the Serpent Binds by Sara Tantlinger – a cult of the feminine divine…and terrible
  • The Taste of Decay by Steve Neal – this one is just so perfectly fucked up

Although most of the stories in Les Petites Morts I chose are by authors I already know I love, I did still find a few that were new to me in my list of absolute favorites – specifically Kelsey Christine McConnell and Steve Neal. So, I will definitely be seeking out more of their work in the future. But honestly, there isn’t a story included in this collection that I didn’t enjoy.

Rating:

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

This is a truly solid collection that I highly recommend picking up if this sort of thing is…your thing.
