It was announced just a few days ago. We’re cooked, chat. Storytelling is dead. At least at A24 it is. To see the studio responsible for releasing some of the most interesting movies to be made in recent years (made from human minds, no less) bow down to the dystopia barreling down upon us is depressing to say the least.
According to Variety, A24 will “work with Google’s DeepMind unit to develop new AI-powered technologies for filmmakers,” and “the partnership will “give A24 access to DeepMind’s research and infrastructure, while DeepMind researchers will work with the studio to build out new workflows.”
Ultimately, I don’t care at all what they plan to use it for. I think existing AI models deserve a swift and silent death. We can bring AI back and have this argument again later once every model in existence is trained top to bottom using ONLY appropriately licensed data. No skimming the internet and stealing every thought, word, and image ever put online with no recourse, credit, or liability. And no generative AI. Ever. For anyone. I’ve seen some try to argue that gen-ai not existing is somehow ableist, but please, miss me with that nonsense. Just say you’re not good at something that you want to be good at, but you don’t want to put in the work – that’s really all you have to do. Creatives of all sorts are able to adapt and overcome limitations every day. You too could do that – if you bothered to do the work to become an actual creative (use that brain you’re intent on wasting!).
Anyway, I hate it here. I hate what A24 is involving themselves in. But, not sure what I expected from the company hocking $45 branded beach towels (which I feel like used to be more like $60, but I could be wrong)… Maybe they were always moving toward ensloppification.
