There are a LOT of movies coming out in 2020 that I am ranging from cautiously optimistic about to pants-wettingly excited about. I decided to gather them all up in one Upcoming Movie Roundup to help myself remember what to buy tickets to, and to hopefully help someone find out about something cool that they may have missed out on otherwise.
Underwater – January 10, 2020
Underwater monster movie. I’m in. I’ve heard that outside the Twilight realm, Kristen Stewart is actually quite good, and she seems to be emoting just fine in the trailer, so… I’ll give it a shot.
Fantasy Island – Releases February 14, 2019
The mysterious Mr. Roarke makes the most secret dreams of his guests come true at his luxurious tropical getaway. But when the fantasies inevitably go awry, the guests are forced to figure out just what the hell is going on and get on out of there.
I like the idea of this because I always thought that show was a lot more nasty than they let on. Although I’ve watched very little of it, so…what the hell do I know.
The Invisible Man – Releases February 28, 2020
I definitely feel cautiously optimistic about this one. Remember Universal’s Dark Universe? The Mummy, for fuck’s sake… Ugh. Although they also did 2010’s The Wolfman, which (and I WILL fight you on this) despite all of the production troubles was a really enjoyable film.
The synopsis:
When Cecilia’s abusive ex takes his own life and leaves her fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax. As a series of coincidences turn lethal, Cecilia works to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.
Anyway, The Invisible Man is another adaptation of the classic H.G. Wells novel, and with Elizabeth Moss involved, I actually have some hope for it.
Antlers – releases April 17, 2020 – UPDATED: this movie seems like it’s never going to come out. It just keeps getting pushed back and pushed back. Sad face.
Produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by Scott Cooper.
A mysterious creature escapes from its confines to wreak bloody havoc in a small Oregon town.
Umm…there’s monsters, and moody music, lots of blood, and Guillermo del Toro. What’s not to love here? Oh, and it’s in the PNW, and so am I! It’s like we’re neighbors, me and the Antlers!
Monster Problems – also April 17, 2020
I tried to find a trailer for this one, but the trailer marked as “Monster Problems” on YouTube is actually for Impossible Monsters starring Greg from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and which incidentally also looks like it might be good. But… not helpful.
Monster problems is a monsterpocalypse survival movie starring Michael Fucking Rooker and some younger dude. MFR is what’s really important.
Black Widow – May 1, 2020
Caution level: astronomical.
I love Black Widow, and I think that Scarlett Johannson has done a great job playing her, but I kind of feel like this movie is so deep in cash-grab territory that I’m not sure it will be able to see its way out. Which is too bad. She’s an interesting character.
Unfortunately, right now this is what passes for an IMDB synopsis: ” A film about Natasha Romanoff in her quests between the films Civil War and Infinity War.”
Sorry, what? We are following her on some side quests? Okay then…
Candyman sequel – June 2020
I’ve got nothing on this one yet, other than it’s co-written and produced by Jordan Peele, directed by Nia Costa (Little Woods) and it is a “spiritual sequel” *not a reboot* of one of my favorite horror franchises. Good enough for me.
Wonder Woman 1984 – squishy-feeling release date is June 5, 2020
I feel a high level of caution here. There’s not a real synopsis yet, and I have almost no trust in DC to make something I want to watch – their track record is not good for me. But I did like the first WW, so I’m willing to give this one a shot.
Also, the poster is really cool.
We’ll see. Maybe it will be worth seeing.
Bill and Ted: Face the Music – releases August 21, 2020
No trailer or promo photos yet for this one – just this announcement, and this synopsis:
A visitor from the future tells best friends Bill and Ted that one of their songs can save life as we know it and bring harmony to the universe.
I don’t care – I’m in. The Bill and Ted movies are some of my absolute favorites, so this one is a total shoe-in for me. It probably doesn’t hurt that separate from my love of the film series, I also completely adore Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves. They both just seem like lovely people and I want to support them.
Venom 2 – October 2, 2020
I hate how many comic book movies made it on here – I have a weakness. But this one is supposed to have Carnage in it, so… I’m there. Also, that first one wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected it to be. Tom Hardy can carry the weight of some pretty incredible amounts of bullshit.
But… Carnage! This means we are (in theory) one step closer to a Deadpool vs. Carnage movie.
Army of the Dead – October 27, 2020
This is a zombie heist movie, so, I feel like I have to see it based on that nonsensical premise alone. And the cast contains Dave Bautista (thank you wrestling for occasionally providing us with wonderful actors).
And it’s a Netflix joint, so I won’t have to leave my house.
The downside? Zack Snyder. I predict this movie will be 90% unnecessary slo-mo.
Dune – December 18, 2020
Again, no pics or trailers to report yet, but… I LOVE DUNE. I love the books, the movie, blah blah blah. This one is supposed to be sticking nice and closely to the original novel, so I’m in. I don’t need to know more yet.
this was such a fab list! ive added so many of these to my to-watch list, thank you!!!
Yay! Glad you found it useful!
I am really looking forward to The Invisible Man! And you are so right about Tom Hardy and Venom!
Added all of these to my to watch list, so excited for Venom 2!!!!
I know! I didn’t want to be, but… Tom Hardy. He’s just so good in everything.
OFT 100%!!!
Hey Angie! Thanks for putting together this list. I’m sure I’ll end up seeing Black Widow and WW although I am skeptical, like you. We’ll both have to keep our fingers crossed!
BILL AND TED!! I’m all over that!
Black Widow, Wonder Woman, Bill and Ted, and maybe Halloween as there’s not a lot of movies to look forward to next year so far
