My Thoughts:
I have found myself becoming quite the fan of Welsh duo tAngerinecAt. These two people (Zhenia Purpurovsky and Paul Chilton). It seems like there may be nothing these two can’t accomplish. They are both multi-instrumentalists, and they’re both very, very good at what they do. Purpurovsky’s vocals on Grief are stunning. This single is both bleak and beautiful, containing strong anti-war, anti-fascist messaging – which I, as a citizen of what I’m sure is about to become the New Republic of America Under Dictator Trump, really resonated with.
Grief pulls from the landscape of Wales, as well as its rich mythology to guide the listener through, not around, their grief, eventually pulling them out the other side. I think that methodology is an incredibly important part of this piece of music. It feels as though tAngerinecAt is telling the listener that yes, things are bad right now, but the only way out is by embracing the chaos, the heartache, and the grief, and growing from it.
