With Sand, Salt, Blood , editor Elle Turpitt has brought together twenty short stories & poems which explore the mysterious depths of the ocean and what lurks beneath the waves. Every time Sliced Up Press puts out a new book, I get excited. They’ve made a habit of compiling some incredibly strong collections featuring a lot of fantastic writers.
Sand, Salt, Blood is no exception. If asked which piece is my favorite, I’d be deadlocked between SIX of them. Six works in this collection were vying for my top spot. In a collection of 20 short stories/poems, 6 favorites is pretty incredible.
My personal favorites were:
- Nothing That Doth Fade by Ariel Dodson
- Undone by Max Turner
- Swallow the Ocean by Daphne Fama
- The Aequor by H.M. Lightcap
- Fishing License by Grace Daly
- The Tide Will Bring Thee Home by Dai Baddley
As a human with some sort of sense of self-preservation, I have a VERY healthy respect for the sea. I got stung by a jellyfish once while I was living in Florida, and it super sucked. Also, have you seen some of the shit that lives up in there?! Big bunch of fucking nope deep down… Really cool, strangely beautiful Nope, but Nope nonetheless. Sand, Salt, Blood is gonna dig nice and deep into all of that dark and terrifying Nope. And then let you wallow in it.
Rating:
A very well compiled collection of genuinely spooky sea-stories.
