My Top 50 Movies of the 2010s – Part 1

The 2010s have been a really incredible decade for movie fans. We’ve seen such a wide variety of amazing films come out!

Before I jump in, I do want to preface by saying that there are several movies that have come out this decade (and in particular this year) that I really want to see, but for one reason or another haven’t gotten around to yet. If I left something amazing out, that might be why. I have spent most of the decade in school, so I’ve been a little short on free time.

So, without further ado, and in no particular order:

John Wick 3: Parabellum (2019)

I love the John Wick franchise, and I don’t care who knows it. It’s got the right amount of blood, vengeance, and mayhem. Also it’s got hot-ass middle aged Keanu Reeves. What more could I ask for in a movie?

In this entry we see John fully excommunicado, and carrying a $14 million price tag on his beautiful head. What ever will he do? My money is on kill the ever-loving shit out of some people.

There’s also several additional puppies this time around, and you can never have too many puppies not getting hurt in a fast-paced shoot-em-up movie.

Get Out (2017)

Get Out is all about the horrors of benevolent racism. Chris’ girlfriend invites him for a weekend upstate at her parents’ rich people compound. They are weird. Like, really, really weird. At first Chris thinks that their bizarre-level over-friendliness is just nerves – like maybe they didn’t realize Rose was in an interracial relationship and their WASP-y little brains aren’t quite sure what to do with this new information, but it becomes more and more clear to him that there is something waaaay more sinister going on.

Rose’s parents are so strangely conciliatory that you just know right from the start that something is wrong here. But, when you finally get to the reveal, that growing suspicion will still not have adequately prepared you for the OMGWTF! that’s coming.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

I love the post-apocalyptic world of Mad Max. That may be my favorite Cinematic Universe. George Miller’s vision has provided me with a literal lifetime of aesthetic inspiration.

While Fury Road comes many (many, many) years after the last Mad Max installment, I’m going to go ahead and say that it was worth the wait. And Tom Hardy is every bit as wonderful as Max Rockatansky as Mel Gibson was.

The best thing about this entry into Max-dom is that it isn’t even really about Max. I mean, yeah, he’s there, and he’s perfect, but the story is really about Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) – her redemption and her return home. This movie is furiously paced (see what I did there?), beautifully shot, and feminist as fuck – and I don’t care if you don’t agree with that, because it’s still true, regardless. I think this movie might have been my absolute favorite of the decade.

Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Yeah, there’s gonna be a couple of Marvel movies on here. Sorry not sorry. Most of them are just okay, but a few of them have been really fantastic. This is one of them.

I love Taika Waititi. I think that everything he’s done is brilliant, and this entry into the MCU is no different. Thor: Ragnarok took an otherwise floundering franchise character (sorry Hemsworth, ILY, but the Thor series had previously been highly underwhelming) and slapped the life back into him. Waititi’s film is basically Planet Hulk but with a shitload of good humor. That’s a can’t-lose scenario as far as I’m concerned. This movie is just so much fun!

Hereditary (2018)

In case you haven’t had a chance to see this one yet, I’m going to try to be really mindful of what I say. This movie deserves to be gone into as fresh as possible. Please just see it.

It’s intense, it’s scary, and it’s so rife with deep-seated family turmoil. It wasn’t at all what I expected, but in the best possible way.

Add to that the fact that there are some well and truly ‘what the FUCK’ moments, and I think it’s abundantly clear why director Ari Aster is someone to keep your eye on. I think this movie is one of those rare cases where the film actually lives up to the hype.

Dolemite Is My Name (2019)

Dolemite is my name is amazing for a whole host of reasons. First of all, it chronicles the life of Rudy Ray Moore, the comedy/rap pioneer who created the kung-fu/blaxploitation spectacular Dolemite.

Second, this movie marks the return of someone I’ve missed dearly – the foul-mouthed comedian, Eddie Murphy. For a long, long time now, pretty much the only side of Eddie we’ve seen has been Family Friendly Eddie. Now, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that version of Mr. Murphy, but the profane, in your face side of him has always, and will always be my favorite. He was absolutely perfectly cast here.

Dolemite is my name, and fuckin’ up motherfuckers is my game!

Honestly, the whole cast here is phenomenal – Craig Robinson, Keegan-Michael Key, Mike Epps, Titus Burgess, Snoop Dogg, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, all spot-fucking-on.

Deadpool (2016)

I love Deadpool, and I don’t care who knows it. Ryan Reynolds was the perfect choice for ‘pool, which I think we all knew in…was it Origins? Despite the fact that the filmmakers there went out of their way to try to convince us otherwise.

Well, fuck them. We were right. Reynolds is perfect. I can’t imagine Wade Wilson being played by anyone else. And I don’t get tired of these movies. I think I’ve probably watched this first one at least a dozen times. It’s still incredibly funny. Also, if we keep watching, maybe we’ll get a DP v Carnage movie! That’s my hope anyway. I say, bring on the Deadpool movies! Even if nobody else wants to see them anymore, I’d probably keep paying to watch them.

Little Monsters (2019)

Instead of re-writing my thoughts, I will point you instead to my previous post about this movie which I enjoyed immensely.

Full review Here.

That should tell you everything you want to know about why this movie is worth your time.

Just give it a shot.

I promise you won’t regret it.

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019)

As it states, this is a reboot.

It is magical.

There’s a lot of nostalgia, and a lot of heart.

I honestly loved this movie, but again I already reviewed it Here.

Jay and Bob travel across the country trying to stop the movie they were trying to stop from getting made in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back from being rebooted.

Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse (2019)

I know this one technically came out at the tail end of 2018, but I saw it in 2019, while it was still in movie theaters, so I feel like it still counts.

Delving into the ‘verse was a great idea. I’m so tired of seeing the same old tired-ass Peter Parker story.

Miles Morales was a novel change. And throw in Spider Gwen, Peter B. Parker, Spider Ham, Noir Spiderman and Penny Parker, and the novelty becomes even more pronounced. I mean, we’ve had to re-watch Peter Parker’s orgin story what, 3 times in modern film franchises? Diversity of Spider-hero representation made what was beginning to feel worn out feel fresh all over again.

Also, the animation was really beautiful. It definitely had the feel of a comic book.

There will be more movies to look forward to next Wednesday, so make sure you check back!

I’m going to do 20 next week and 20 the last week in December. I know that’s a weird divide, but…I have a headache right now, so I just don’t feel like doing 15 more today in order to do 25 and 25.
