WTF Did I Just Watch? Dark Match

If you like movies that are dumb, but in, like, a really fun way Dark Match is probably a good choice for you. The whole time I was watching it, I was asking myself why I was still watching it. But the answer is that it’s so much fun!

Fair warning, even the premise is stupid: “A small-time wrestling company accepts a well-paying gig in a backwoods town only to learn, too late, that the community is run by a mysterious cult leader with devious plans for their match.” You’ll never guess what the cult leader’s name is.

Try and guess.

I’ll wait.

It’s…Leader. I love it.

Leader (aka The Prophet) is played by Chris Jericho at arguably his hammy best. He’s a mysterious (I guess) weirdo who either really likes power, or really likes Satan – unclear. And he’s got plans for these wrestlers. Until he doesn’t. But that’s okay, because his disciples still have plans for them (at least one or two of them do).

This movie is dumb as hell, alright? That is the absolute truth. But I promise you that it is also really fun and totally worth watching. The fights are well choreographed, there’s violence galore, and a premise so intensely silly that you’re going to love every minute of it. And honestly, Ayisha Issa as Miss Behave steals the whole show. She is apparently a former stunt actor, and it shows. She really gives her fight scenes her all – but her whole performance is pretty incredible.

You can catch Dark Match on Shudder or rent it from any of the places, it looks like. I watched on Shudder though as part of The Last Drive In which is how I recommend doing it if you want to learn some stuff and hear from director Lowell Dean (who also did Wolf Cop, so if you liked that – and how could you not – you won’t want to miss this one).
